Not every innovation of the F1 2019 is convincing, but thanks to the superior preparation of the earlier series parts, the latest part will be thrilling – at least if you do not care about the story behind.
Vettel, Hamilton, Bottas – these are names that every Formula One fan knows. But what about Artjom Markelow, Alessio Lorandi and Niko Kari? Here only nod to Formula 2 spectators, all others shake his head.
However, with F1 2019 , Codemasters chooses to make Formula 2 the most important innovation in the game, incorporating all the drivers, cars and rules of the racing class into the game.
A logical step: the driving experience convinces with its precise balancing act between arcade and simulation already for years, here Codemasters only makes detail enhancements. By contrast, with a brand new racing class, you can drastically increase the size and further enrich the overall package. And if the campaign has been too sober so far, there will be a short story to tell – but its potential is far from exhausted.
The cars of Formula 2 are characterized mainly by a longer braking distance and slower acceleration compared to Formula 1. They also lose grip faster if you give too much gas when cornering. The formula 2 differs from the big series brother also in some rule points, the Codemasters has taken detail.
The big innovation of the F1 series is the F2. Codemasters has taken over all teams and wagons of the sister class including official regulations, but so far only from the 2018/19 season.
A race weekend is not one race, but two: a normal race and a sprint race over a shorter distance. Who wins the qualifying, gets four points credited, for the fastest lap there are again two counters. In addition, in the second race, the starting position of the first eight drivers turns around.
So far, only the drivers from the Formula 2 season of 2018 stuck in F1 2019, the current will provide Codemasters with a free patch later. Another downside: The Formula 2 cars are only available in single player, but not in online races – even that changes with a later patch.
Although the campaign in F1 2019 will start in Formula 2 this year, you will not be driving through the entire race calendar, but will only complete a few laps in three short scenarios. After that, the introduction ends and you rise to the premier class.
In the first scenario, for example, the car suffers from a loss of performance, so you have to let your teammate down. This is done quickly and not very exciting, but serves as a front-runner for the story of F1 2019.
After each scenario, you will collide with your team-mate Lukas Weber and your rival Devon Butler in a cutscene for a quick exchange.
The fictional racers are however clearly exaggerated: Butler considers himself the best racer in the world and is defeated even in a defeat for no excuse, our teammate speaks against us constantly and praises the team spirit. Although this gives our competitors a personality, the action does not offer more than an over-the-top staging.
But worst of all: After the three scenarios and the change to Formula 1, the story ends already! Although you read in transcripts, what the two fictitious drivers so tell about you in interviews, there are no cutscenes anymore.
If you do not feel like the F2 pre-skirmish and the two new riders, you can skip the introduction and swing right behind the cockpit of Ferrari, Mercedes, Red Bull and Co.
The campaign in F1 2019 offers hardly anything new apart from the F2 introduction, but it motivates thanks to the management and role play elements introduced in its predecessors. Commendable again is the research and development system.
When you achieve team goals and complete training programs, you get resource points that you invest in your car. For example, you improve the engine for more power or the aerodynamics for better handling. A great solution against Grind: If you do not feel like completing all training programs every race weekend, you can have them simulated in F1 2019 for the first time. Then you will not get all resource points, but at least half.
Meanwhile, the campaign feels very dynamic: your opponents are screwing their cars from week to week, which increases the team performance of the teams over the season. As with the predecessor, the regulations for some parts change with the start of the new season, which can jumble the performance of the cars. In addition, the Formula 1 drivers now independently change the teams. Small atmosphere shortcoming: They still keep their old sponsor stickers on the helmet.
Also in the contract negotiations has changed in comparison to the predecessor nothing: Drive her good results and stick to the team goals, you may ask for renegotiate bonuses like faster pit stops or multiple vehicle updates at the same time. Only the interviews after training, qualifying and races, which were introduced in the predecessor, can be annoying in the long run because they are too predictable again.
The vehicles tend this year something to understeer, but otherwise the driving experience is very similar to the predecessor F1 2018 . Meaning: If you turn off all driving aids such as traction control, ABS, driving assistance and switching assistance, you will get a nearly credible Formula 1 and Formula 2 experience, but can not expect a hardcore simulation in the style of an iRacing or Assetto Corsa .
Too fast out of a corner? Your car is turning. Started too early at the start? That gives a penalty. You brak too late and strong before a turn? The tires block, white smoke rises. On the other hand, if you activate all driving aids, F1 2019 almost plays like an arcade racer and forgive yourself many mistakes.
The AI sets her from level 1 to 110 for subtle differences. Of course, you drive the most precise with the steering wheel, for which the game gives you numerous setting options from key assignment via calibration to force feedback. Codemasters has published a list of all supported steering wheels .
The controller with controller also works well. Theoretically, you can also drive with a keyboard, but this mainly limits the steering and gas metering. So city courses like Monaco and Azerbaijan become a struggle for survival.
Codemasters has put away some resources in modes and extras off the track this year. For example, there is now a showroom where you can see all the cars in the game with performance data and description.
The panoramic shots and insights into the team boxes before a race are even better staged this year, the faces of the official drivers seem a bit more true to the original. Graphically, the night race with its pretty headlamp lighting is the main attraction this year.
F1 2019 now also stores highlights after a race, which you can watch directly after the finish line or at a later time in the new Replay mode. The photo mode is of course also back and allows you snapshots with many different filters and settings.
Less comfortable, however, is the E-Sports menu. Although there is now a separate tab in the main menu, but almost all buttons out of the game and open a separate browser window.
The bad news in advance: Also in this iteration Codemasters waives a local split screen. In addition, the developer has canceled the online championship, but you can still put together your own championships – now in their own leagues.
In leagues, you’ll connect with like-minded players and create racing events that take place over the course of several real-time weekends, just like the big role model. In addition, you will again participate in rated and unrated races.
For the extra dose of motivation, Codemasters has come up with visual adaptations for your car. In online races, you no longer have to resort to licensed racing cars, but you can also drive in your own car. This refers only to the choice of paint.
With every completed leaderboard race, you will earn points that you will get in new liveries for your car as well as helmets, suits and gloves for your rider. Codemasters also offers some real-money items and finishes via Steam. But they do not change the performance of the car.
Overall, F1 2019 adds a new racing class to its excellent basic structure, making the Formula family a bit more complete
